A Talahi Island teenager pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to murdering his own father.
16-year-old Preston Phelps entered into a plea deal and pleaded guilty to malice murder, domestic violence, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence.
Phelps was charged in the September 2012 death of 64-year-old Thomas Phelps. Phelps was 14-years-old at the time of his arrest. He is being charged as an adult.
He was charged with malice murder, felony murder, three counts of domestic violence aggravated assault, false statements and writings, three counts of tampering with evidence and criminal solicitation to conceal the death of another person.
He will receive a life sentence for the malice murder charge; a 10-year probated sentence to run consecutive to the malice murder charge. He will be eligible for parole after 30 years.
Prosecutors won't be moving forward to prosecute him on the remaining charges.
One of the conditions of his negotiated plea deal was that if Phelps is asked to testify on anything related to this case, he has to do so.
Phelps' mother, Judith Phelps, 54, is charged with four counts of false statements and writings, two counts of tampering with evidence and two counts of concealing a death.
She was not scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, but she is scheduled to stand trial on Dec. 2.
