SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say two men died after a fatal collision overnight on Veterans Pkwy in Savannah.

Emergency crews responded to a bad two-vehicle wreck around 2:30 a.m. Thursday on Veterans Parkway northbound exactly 1-mile before the Chatham Pkwy exit.

Officials say Mark Gunter, 57, of Bridlewood Drive, died at the scene when the Chevrolet Suburban he was driving southbound in the northbound lane of Veterans Pkwy collided with a BMW near Chatham Pkwy.

Anthony Davis, 25, of Quail Hollow Court West, driver of the BMW that Gunter struck head-on, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center where he died around 7:30 a.m.

Both lanes of Veterans Pkwy northbound were shut down for several hours as Savannah-Chatham Metro's Major Accident Investigation Team looked into the cause of the crash. The road re-opened to traffic around 6:40 a.m.
