A downtown Nashville parking garage was the scene of a very violent late night crime. A young woman leaving work was attacked, police say, by a convicted rapist.
That man, accused of robbing and assaulting the woman with a brick, had been free after a one-year prison sentence for violating, the sex offender registry was suspended.
After 90 days, Antonio L. Sweatt, 50, was back on the streets where police say he attacked again.
The 25-year-old victim was walking to her car early after midnight Nov. 6 in a parking garage at 5th Avenue North and Commerce Street when Sweatt allegedly demanded money, struck her in the head with a brick and stole her purse.
The victim was able to hide under a stairwell for a few minutes before going outside and calling police from a passerby's phone.
She was treated and released from a local hospital and later identified Sweatt from a photo lineup.
Sweatt was arrested Wednesday at an apartment on Jefferson Street and jailed on $150,000 bond.
