TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -
A lockdown was lifted Friday morning at a Tempe middle school after police found a boy was carrying a BB gun on campus.
Police had scoured the campus of Fees College Preparatory Middle School after two students told school officials the student showed them a gun in a backpack just before 8 a.m., Tempe police Sgt. Mike Pooley said.
The girls told police that the boy, whom they said they didn't know, told them it was fake, but they thought it was real and that it didn't have an orange airsoft tip.
No threats were made and no one was hurt, Pooley said.
About 20 to 30 officers searched the school at 1600 E. Watson Dr. Police found the boy and he said he had given the airsoft gun to another student. Both students were arrested for felony disruption of an educational facility.
School officials said this is at least the second threat in recent months. A school spokesperson said around Halloween a teacher cleaning up her classroom found a note with a threat. The incident was investigated but no physical threat was found.
Fees College Preparatory Middle School Principal Kacy S. Tomason sent the following letter to parents on Friday:
"This letter is to inform you of a situation that unfolded on our campus today. I want to make sure you have accurate information and ask for your assistance.
"This morning, two Fees College Prep students believe that they saw a weapon in another student's backpack. The student with the backpack told the two students that what they saw was a toy, but the two students felt it was still important to notify staff. Administrators immediately began to investigate and contacted Tempe Police, who ordered a lockdown. The investigation involved officers searching every backpack to ensure stu-dent safety. During the search, a BB gun was located.
"This is a reminder of how serious we take issues like this when it comes to your student's safety. Please talk with your child about not bringing any item to school that doesn't contribute to the learning process.
"As we continue to raise achievement and expectations at Fees College Preparatory Middle School, we will also continue to communicate with you openly and honestly. Thank you for your continued support of our safe, orderly, and caring environment."
