For the second year in a row, the display in Goodwin Park for Holiday Light Fantasia, which benefits the Channel 3 Kids Camp, was targeted by vandals.
Whoever is responsible for the destruction caused $1,500 in damage when they cut wires and smashed bulbs over the weekend.
"I don't know what kind of enjoyment somebody can get out of that," said Norm LeBlanc of Trantolo and Trantolo, which supports Channel 3 Kids Camp. "It's beyond me."
The characters from the television show SpongeBob SquarePants, the menorah and three kings display were damaged.
Workers were able to get the menorah back up and running, and the rest of the repairs were expected to be made Monday.
"They chose to cut a lot of the chords off on some of our displays, most notably our menorah," said Denise Hornbecker with Channel 3 Kids Camp. "And then to just take and be malicious about the bulbs, just taking some instrument and cracking the bulbs and breaking them."
The Channel 3 Kids Camps is now offering a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible.
This is the second time the display has been targeted. Last year someone stole equipment from trailers.
In response to the recent vandalism, police were stepping up patrols around the display.
Hartford police continue to investigate the vandalism and those with information are urged to call Hartford police at 860-757-4000 or the tip line at 860-722-TIPS (8477). All calls will be kept confidential.
Holiday Light Fantasia is the largest fundraiser each year for the Channel 3 Kids Camp.
