HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Wednesday was a tense and emotional day for three families in a Hartford Superior Courtroom as a man was sentenced for murdering his estranged wife and her friend.

Police said Rocky Williams shot and killed 26-year-old Alyceson Williams, who was also known as Alyceson Archer, and her friend, Dean Samuels at her Maple Avenue apartment in Hartford on Dec. 15 2011.

Rocky Williams, who was 32 years old at the time of the fatal shooting, kicked in the door and shot his wife.

After Rocky Williams shot her, police said he went outside, reloaded his gun and tracked down Samuels inside the apartment. Rocky Williams shot Samuels through the door he was barricading, police said.

"(It was) very hard, especially standing beside his mom, my aunt," said Althea Sergeant, who is the cousin of Samuels. "It is very emotional for her, very tough for her. It was heart wrenching."

Alyceson Williams and Rocky Williams were in the middle of a divorce at the time of shooting.

According to court documents, there were four domestic violence incidents between Rocky Williams and Alyceson Williams in the year and a half before the murders. Alyceson Williams also had a protective order on Rocky Williams.

"Christmas is two weeks away, and we still gotta convince my nephew that his mom's not coming home," said Karen Snellings, who is the sister of Alyceson Williams.

Rocky Williams was on the run from police until he was arrested in January 2012.

Court documents stated that Rocky Williams admitted to friends that he shot and killed Alyceson Williams and Samuels.

In October 2013, Rocky Williams pleaded guilty to murder and manslaughter. Family members of his victims gave statements before his sentencing Wednesday, calling him evil, and a monster.

But Rocky Williams' father, Rocky Fowler, from North Dakota said that's not the son he knew.

"I was proud that he owned up to what he did," Fowler said. "I was sorry that it happened. And I'm sure he is too."

The family of Rocky Williams begged the judge for mercy and claimed the couple's divorce had him in a state of turmoil.

As the judge sentenced him to 55 years behind bars, the judge told Rocky Williams she cannot think of a more tragic situation he created for his 7-year-old son.

"We have to find a way to peacefully coexist for the benefit of him," Fowler said. "He needs all the love he can get from both families."

Alyceson and Rocky Williams had a son together. Rocky Jr. is now 7 years old and was raised by her family.

The Williams family is hopeful they'll be able to coexist and both raise Rocky Jr. together.

Rocky Williams did address the judge and courtroom before his sentencing. He asked Alyceson's family to let his son see his family.

He also said he should have walked away that night and said "nobody should ever have to live with what I've done."
