Senior Santa event held in Springfield

Senior citizens gathered in the community room at Saab Court for an afternoon of socializing, food, gifts and even a little dancing, as the 10th annual Senior Santa event was held on Sunday.

All of the gifts were donated by the Buffalo Soldier Motorcycle Club for the seniors to give to their grandchildren.

Also on hand was state Rep. Cheryl Coakley-Rivera, who said that bringing everyone together for the holidays is what this program is all about.

"We decided we were going to offer the Senior Santa program about 10 years ago and we do it at about 10 different complexes," said Coakley-Rivera. "It's a wonderful event and it's the seniors that become the Santa obviously. That's what it's all about and that's why we're here today. You know it brings us together, whether it's over a meal, over friendship or over a gift for a grandchild."

Despite this weekend's weather, program organizer Frida Venag said she was not surprised by Sunday's turnout and the program has grown steadily.

"We're growing because I'm the kind of person, I get to my tenants, I reach out and let them know that we're here to grow and help each other," said Venag.  "This is the best thing that we can do for them every year."

Both Coakley-Rivera and the motorcycle club distributed the gifts to those in attendance.
