Suspected "pajama burglar" targets Church Hill homes

The search is on for a burglary suspect accused of targeting a Church Hill neighborhood in pajamas. Police say the suspect broke into a home on the 400 block of North 32nd Street, last Friday. He was also seen walking through the neighborhood, knocking on door after door, likely to see if anyone was home.

The neighbors who answered say they couldn't miss his bright, flannel pj's. Police say the pajama perpetrator broke into a home through a back window. Investigators say the man stole two laptops, a kindle fire tablet, and even clothes. He may have needed those clothes, since he's described as wearing red-orange plaid pants.

Chris Nemeth and his family live down the road from the house hit.

"If I'm not here, I'm worried about my wife and my daughter. I think that we need to make sure that we're very cautious," said Nemeth.

"In his pajamas he knocks on the door? ...It's unnerving," said longtime neighbor Roger Shaoul.

One neighbor says that after the man knocked on her door and she answered, he asked her for directions to a park that's just down the street.

"Probably seeing if you're home or not…just to see how easy it would be for him to get in," theorized Jake Majeski. He lives across the street from the house that was burglarized.

Police say they've also gotten a report of the man knocking on doors on the 3,300 block of East Broad Street, around the corner from 32nd Street.

"We don't open doors for people… I have seen a lot more police recently... Hopefully it'll be a deterrent," continued Nemeth.

Many residents say they're making sure their doors are locked, so prowlers in pajamas will think again before striking in sleepwear.

Neighbors say police alerted them to the burglary, warning people to take extra precautions.

Investigators say the person of interest is described as a black male, with a medium build, in his 20's. He was wearing plaid, pajama- type pants that were reddish, orange or brown in color. He had on a black fleece jacket. He was last seen in the area of the Blue Wheeler Grocery store.
