Richmond Public Schools announce superintendent finalists

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Richmond School Board has narrowed the search for the new Superintendent to three finalists.

Dana Bedden, Anthony Jackson and Calvin Watts will take part in a community forum Wednesday night at Albert Hill Middle School from 6 to 9:30 p.m. The public will be able to meet the candidates and there will be an open interview with the three finalists.

Dr. Dana Bedden more recently served as Superintendent of the Irving Independent School District in Texas. The district serves more than 35,000 students at 38 schools with 4,500 employees.

Dr. Bedden received his doctorate from Virginia Tech in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and has 20 years of experience in administration including serving as superintendent for Richmond County in Georgia and Regional Superintendent for Philadelphia Public Schools.

In 2013, two of Irving's four high schools were selected for Newsweek's Best High Schools. The district's graduation rate increased from 78 percent in 2009 to 86 percent in 2013.

Dr. Anthony Jackson was named the 2013 NC Central-Region Superintendent of the Year and is currently Superintendent of Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools in North Carolina. The district serves more than 16,000 students and contains 29 schools with 2,100 employees. Dr. Jackson previously was division Superintendent of the Henry County Public School System in Collinsville.

He began his career 25-years-ago as a teacher's assistant and has served in administrative posts for public school systems in Virginia and North Carolina. He also has experience with charter schools, having served was principal and Chief Administrative Offer for the Arts and Technology Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. and as a Regional Vice President for Curriculum and Instruction for a charter school management company.

Dr. Calvin Watts is currently an Assistant Superintendent in the Division of School Improvement and Operations in Gwinnett County Public Schools, the largest school district in Georgia with 169,000 students. Dr. Watts joined the district in 2001, serving in a number of positions. 

The board has until December 27 to select the next superintendent.
