Brisk business for snowblower repair shop

Posted: Updated:

For some local business owners, there's no business like snow business. One man from Wethersfield earns his living fixing snowblowers, and for him, that motto is definitely true.

"We're backed up," said John Ambruso Jr. "We're probably about two weeks out, which isn't too bad."

Business is booming at Wethersfield Small Engine Services, which specializes in fixing and tuning up snowblowers.

Dozens of machines have been dropped off for all kinds of repairs including major carburetor issues, belts and shear pin problems.

Ambruso, who is a displaced aerospace engineer, and his small staff work 12-hour shifts most days to keep customers coming back.

A dry erase board outlines each problem and parts that are needed.

The following tips are important when using a snowblower:

  • Read the owner's manual.
  • Shut the fuel off when you aren't using it.
  • Never put your hands near the blades.
  • Make sure you clear any sticks, stones, even newspapers from your sidewalks and driveway.
  • Check the gas/oil and make sure oil is topped off to a desired level.
  • Use 5-30 oil.
  • If you used your snowblower the day before, make sure you run the snow out of it before using it again (if not, it will likely freeze and may cause too much stress on belt).
