NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) -

A registered sex offender was arrested after police said he was trying to lure a 15-year-old girl into his car Thursday afternoon.

An unidentified teenager told police she was walking home from school in the area of Bank Street and Braemer Place around 2:45 p.m.

As she was walking, a man in a motor vehicle let her cross the street and started to "honk his horn at her," police said.

Police said the man, who was later identified as 69-year-old Abbot Dinoto, rolled the car window down, asked her if she wanted a ride home and motioned for her to get into his vehicle.

The 15-year-old yelled at Dinoto, of New London, to leave her alone and she headed toward home. Dinoto told police at that time Dinoto drove off.

The teenager, who was not injured, told her father about the incident and he called police.

A short time later, police located Dinoto driving. He was arrested and charged with criminal attempt at risk of injury to a minor as well as breach of peace.

Police determined that Dinoto had offered the girl a ride home several weeks ago.

Dinoto was arrested for multiple counts of first-degree sexual assault and second-degree sexual assault to a minor in 1991. He was released from prison in 2009.

Dinoto is being held on a $100,000 bond.
