Elderly man's mysterious murder under investigation in Windsor

Posted: Updated:

An 87-year-old Windsor man was found dead at home, almost a month to the day after losing his wife to cancer, and his death is being called a homicide.

Police said one of John Chakalos' daughters stopped at his home on Overlook Drive to check on her father when she found him dead at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

Chakalos died after being shot in the head and chest, according to the chief medical examiner.

On Friday, several Windsor and state police cruisers were seen outside the home, and neighbors told Eyewitness News investigators were seen at the residence all weekend.

"[I] can't speak about leads or motives, but we're looking at a number of different angles," said Windsor police Capt. Tom LePore. "We're speaking with family members to develop lists of anyone who may have had a motive or reason to harm him."

According to state records, Chakalos ran an investment company out of his home.

Police said Chakalos and his late wife, Rita, were philanthropists and split their time between Connecticut and New Hampshire. In New Hampshire, they had a home known to the community for its fantastic holiday light display.

"He does have holdings up in New Hampshire area, an estate in Chesterfield," LePore said. "Every year, he and his wife decorate it for Christmas and invite the public to come through and donate to the local food bank."

Police added, prior to last week, they didn't know much about John Chakalos. Anyone with information should contact the Windsor Police Department at 860-688-5273.
