SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
An East Texas family received what they're calling their own little Christmas miracle.
On Christmas Eve night, a Gresham family's 7-week-old golden retriever puppy fell into their sewer tank and was nearly lifeless when they found him. Fortunately, the puppy lived to see his first Christmas thanks to an alert 13-year-old and a lot of prayers.
"My son, Carter, as a routine, goes out at night and checks on the puppies and jumps on the trampoline. It's just one of his normal routines. He does have autism so it's just something that he does," explains Carter's mother, Amy Creed.
"I was just like, 'What was that noise?' and all of a sudden, I went back to the house and I told dad, I said, 'Dad, there is something in that pump,'" recalls Carter.
When Carter's dad lifted the lid to the sewer pump, the last puppy in a litter of 7-week-old gold retrievers was clinging to a pipe and struggling to keep his head above the sewage water. The puppy was cold and his body was stiff. They didn't know if the little pup would survive.
"We prayed all of the way to the vet. Prayed and cried and sobbed and held the puppy in a big huge blanket. We prayed for God to please, it seemed like something small, but it's a puppy and [God] tells us to pray about everything, so we were praying about everything," says Amy.
The puppy was in such bad shape that the vet couldn't even get his temperature to register. The puppy was wrapped in blankets, placed on a heating pad and kept at the clinic overnight.
"We asked for God to use it as an opportunity to show our kids that he hears our prayers," says Amy.
Christmas morning the Creed family got news that those prayers were answered. The vet told them the puppy could go home Christmas evening. It's a blessing Carter already saw coming.
"I wasn't nervous," says Carter, who had faith the whole time that the puppy would be alright.
"It is very much a Christmas blessing and a Christmas miracle for sure," says Amy.
When the puppy gets a little stronger, he's going to live with the Creed's cousins, where he'll learn to be a duck hunting dog. As for the sewer tank, the Creeds say they're making sure that lid stays secured to the ground from now on.
