Bozrah: Pay taxes in exchange for permits

An eastern Connecticut town is considering a rule that would deny permits to applicants who are behind on tax payments.

The Bulletin reports that Bozrah's tax collector, Nancy Renshaw, has asked the Board of Selectmen to back the rule change. A town ordinance would be required voters must approve the new rule.

Renshaw says it's not a widespread problem, but the rule would target big-time deadbeats such as a resident she said wanted to install a $10,000 in-ground swimming pool, but hadn't paid taxes.

She says those who can afford a $10,000 pool could likely afford to first pay their taxes.

First Selectman William Ballinger said the idea has merit because being up to date on taxes helps generate revenue that pays for services being sought by applicants for various permits.
