NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV-AP) -

An Alabama pastor wanted in connection with the death of his wife has been arrested at the Nashville International Airport trying to leave the country.

An affidavit said Richard Shahan was "red-flagged" when he booked a flight to Frankfurt, Germany. He was arrested as a fugitive from justice on Wednesday by Homeland Security and jailed in Davidson County.

Shahan was working as a minister at the First Baptist Church of Birmingham in July when his wife, Karen Shahan, was found dead on the couch at their home in Homewood, AL.

Police questioned Richard Shahan in August but released him.

Homewood police said in a news release that they issued an arrest warrant for Richard Shahan on Tuesday "in the murder of his wife."

A statement from the First Baptist Church of Birmingham said Shahan had recently resigned from the church and was planning to work as a missionary in Kazakhstan.

Police said Shahan did not know about the warrant before his arrest.
