Pipe burst causes 7,500 gallons of water to flow through hotel

Posted: Updated:

Guests staying at the Hampton Inn Hotel in Mystic have been evacuated after a pipe burst early today.

Earlier this morning at 6 Hendel Drive, guests were evacuated after two sprinkler heads popped on the second floor.

Old Mystic Fire Chief Ken Richards says that a 2-inch water feeder pipe that feeds the sprinkler heads in the fire suppression system froze, then thawed. This caused 7,500 gallons of water to cascade down into the hotel lobby.

Chief Richards says when first responders arrived there was 3 inches of water on the floor in the lobby.

The hotel relocated their 60 guests to other hotels in the area.

A contractor will go to the hotel to tear down the damaged ceilings, make repairs, and they will most likely have to re-do the lobby of the hotel. Chief Richards estimates the lobby is about ten years old.

The Hampton Inn Hotel is right off I-95 South near Old Mystic Village and Mystic Aquarium.
