Town of Winchester may face state investigation

Posted: Updated:
Winchester, CT (AP) -

State Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor's office is calling for an investigation into whether the town of Winchester is underfunding its schools.

The state Board of Education is scheduled to discuss the recommendation Wednesday. The Register Citizen reports that state education officials have been investigating the school district's funding and now want to add town government to the probe.

School officials say the town hasn't been meeting minimum education spending requirements, a claim denied by town officials. The school district needed a $2 million loan to keep the schools open past December, after an audit showed the former finance director stole more than $2 million from the town.

State officials say the town gave the school district $18.3 million for 2012-13, about $1.6 million less than the minimum requirement.
