Clowney asks for jury trial in 110 MPH speeding ticket case

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has reportedly asked for a jury trial in connection to the speeding ticket he received for going 110 MPH in a 70 MPH zone on Interstate 77.

Clowney's attorney, Pete Strom, said a hearing for that case was scheduled for 2 p.m. in Winnsboro, but he has asked for jury trial, which will postpone the hearing.

Clowney was pulled by a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper around 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 7, 2013 and issued a $355 ticket.

Clowney could have been imprisoned since he was driving 25 miles per hour over the speed limit, but he was not arrested in the stop.

Weeks later, the future NFL player was pulled over again in Columbia on a speeding violation. The Columbia Police officer who pulled Clowney clocked the player at 84 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.

In dashcam footage obtained by WIS, Clowney told the officer he was speeding because he was trying to get to Williams-Brice Stadium before the team left for the Capital One Bowl in Orlando.

Strom says Clowney is taking both citations seriously, but that he didn't do anything that any other college kid has done in exceeding the speed limit, trying to get back to school.

Strom also says Clowney is not taking the "gold chains" approach to his career since he signed with NFL agent Bus Cook who represented Brett Favre, Cam Newton, and others.
