CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
A man was shot multiple times in the back Wednesday evening outside of a Cleveland rec center after a fight started inside, so we investigated overall city rec center security.
The shooting happened outside the Central Recreation Center, and it left Terrance Monroe in critical condition.
We found only some rec centers have police officers working inside, but only some of the time. The latest trouble happened at a center with an officer present.
It works like this: Cleveland is home to 21 rec centers, 13 have off-duty officers working part time 4-8 p.m. weekdays and 2-6 p.m. Saturdays.
Cleveland City Hall says staffing of the officers depends on the need for security and how busy certain centers are.
But, trouble can still happen even with an officer there.
The incident from Wednesday evening started with a fight inside the facility. It was eventually taken outside.
As the officer on site called police radio, Monroe was shot outside.
In November at Zelma George Family Center, an 11-year-old girl says a man offered to pay her for sex. Zelma George is another facility with an officer working part-time.
The city says it also adjusts the rec center security for summer months.
From the City of Cleveland, this is how security officers are staffed:
Through a contract, off-duty officers (or sheriff's deputies) will be assigned to select Recreation Centers four (4) hours per day, Monday thru Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Off-duty officers will remain at the following sites year round: Lonnie Burten, Cudell, Ken Johnson, Fairfax, Michael Zone (Added in 2013 because of water park) and Collinwood. Officers will be deployed at the following sites:
John F. Kennedy
Ken L. Johnson
Earle B. Turner
During the summer months, officers will be deployed from the Recreation Centers to select outdoor pools for eight (8) hours per day from noon until 8:00 p.m. (This was the schedule for 2013)
