PD: Indian, Pakistani families being targeted by residential burglary suspects

Posted: Updated:

Police are warning people of ethnic Indian decent after suspects have targeted them in a recent series of burglaries occurred across the eastern seaboard including in multiple towns in Connecticut.

The crimes have occurred in towns from Maine to New Jersey since July 2013. The burglaries all share the same pattern, but it is not clear if it is the same group of people burglarizing the homes.

In each burglary, the suspect or suspects "forced" their way into the residences via sliding glass door or door in the back of the home. Police said some of the items taken were gold jewelry and "valuable cultural artifacts" as well as cash.

At least five residential burglaries happened in East Haven while three were reported in Norwich. The burglaries were reported on Columbus Avenue, Leigh Drive, Henry Street and Bradley Street over a 10-day period in East Haven, police said.

Norwalk police warned residents earlier this month about a scam targeting Indian and Pakistani families, but never indicated if any burglaries took place in the town.

Investigators in Norwalk said the suspects "appear to be well organized and have an understanding of the Indian and Pakistani cultures."

Residents are being advised to always lock their doors and windows and activate their alarm systems when they are away for an extended period of time. Police also are warning people not to keep large amounts of cash or jewelry at their homes.

Vehicles with New York and New Jersey license plates as well as "unfamiliar individuals" have been spotted in Norwich neighborhoods.

People are being advised to report any suspicious activity or persons to their local police department.

Anyone with any information about the Norwalk incidents is urged to call Norwalk Police Department at 203-854-3184.

Anyone with any information about the Norwich incidents is urged to call Norwich Police Department at 860-886-5561 ext. 500.

Anyone with any information about the East Haven incidents is urged to call East Haven Police Department at 203-468-3820.
