APACHE, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A U.S. Border Patrol agent fatally shot a man after a struggle over the agent's gun in southern Arizona on Thursday night, according to authorities.

Cochise County sheriff's officials said the agent was with other agents tracking a group of people believed to be in the country illegally near the town of Apache.

Two of the people were caught, but a third ran and was later found hiding under a mesquite bush by an agent. The two struggled and the suspect tried to take the agent's gun, authorities said.

The man was later spotted hiding under a mesquite tree and authorities say he began to fight with the agent and tried to take his gun.

Sheriff's officials say the unidentified man, believed to be in his 20s, was shot in the upper body and died at the scene.

The body has been taken to the Pima County Medical Examiner's Office and sheriff's officials say they're investigating the shooting.
