WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) -

Waterbury Police are investigating a murder that happened late Friday night. The murder happened behind the brick apartment building located on the corner of Chestnut Street and Johnson Street.

This is the first homicide in Waterbury this year.

Kareem Morey, 38, of Waterbury, was shot once in chest. He was driven by friends to St. Mary's Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Morey's two sons, ages 19 and 21, were involved in an altercation with a group of men earlier in the day, at the location that Morey was shot. His two sons returned to the same location around 10:30 p.m. with Morey, when a second dispute took place with the same group of men.

During the second fight, a male suspect fired a single shot and struck Morey in the upper chest, according to police.

The investigation is still ongoing, but police have developed strong leads in regards to any suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 203-755-1234.
