Navajo council to decide on removing speaker

Posted: Updated:
FARMINGTON, NM (AP) -

The Navajo Nation Council began its weeklong winter session on Monday with the prospect of the legislative leader being removed from his post.

Delegate Alton Joe Shepherd is sponsoring legislation to oust Speaker Johnny Naize from the job because of pending bribery and conspiracy charges. The bill would not remove Naize as a council delegate.

Naize denies wrongdoing and tells The Associated Press that he remains positive about the upcoming vote. He says stepping down is not an option because the justice system has not run its course and it would set bad precedent.

Prosecutors have alleged that Naize and others engaged in a scheme to divert public money to their families.

Shepherd says his legislation is aimed at preserving the integrity of the speaker's post.
