A 20-year-old woman will stand trial for allegedly striking and killing her boyfriend with her car while he was walking near his Valley home.
Court officials said Brittney Nicole Nolan pleaded not guilty on Thursday to fleeing the scene of a fatal crash.
Phoenix police said Jake Rice, 20, was hit by a car and thrown into an electrical box while walking on the sidewalk near his home in the 33000 block of 27th Drive near Carefree Highway between 2 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 25.
A jogger on a morning run discovered the body about 8:30 a.m.
According to Rice's friends, he was visiting Nolan at a nearby apartment complex when they got into a verbal fight. Rice left the apartment to walk home.
Officers said when they found Nolan, there were no signs of impairment observed. Officers added, however, she did admit to consuming some alcohol during the night at a desert party.
She told investigators she argued with Rice on the way home and he walked away from the vehicle. While she was out looking for him, Nolan said she was using her cell phone at one point and lost control of her car, causing her to go onto the shoulder area, police said.
She continued on, thinking she had struck some kind of pole, police said. Authorities impounded her car, which was spotted with a large dent on the side.
Bond was set at $100,000. She is scheduled to appear in court on March 27 for an initial pretrial conference.
