Canadian surgeon dies in Grand Canyon base jump

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The body of a base jumper recovered in the Grand Canyon has been identified as a 41-year-old Canadian.

David Stather, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was base jumping Friday afternoon near the confluence of the Little Colorado River and the main Colorado River channel, said a Coconino County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

His friends on the canyon floor said they didn't see him after he made his second jump from a cliff, the spokesperson said.

His friends hiked out of the canyon and saw his body about 2,000 feet from the top of the canyon and called authorities, the spokesperson said.

Stather was using a wing suit and parachute, the spokesperson said.

Initial attempts to reach Stather's body by helicopter Friday evening were stymied by darkness.

Authorities said a search and rescue team reached his body Saturday, confirmed his death and transported Stather's body out of the canyon Saturday afternoon to be taken to the medical examiner's office.

Stather was a respirologist, an internist with special qualifications in respirology, at the Alberta Health Center, according to his profile page.

He is survived by his parents, who live in Guelph in the Ontario Province of Canada, the spokesperson said.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office and Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office are continuing their investigation, the spokesperson said.
