TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

One man is dead and another is fighting for his life after the vehicles they were driving collided head on in Pima County early Saturday morning.

A third vehicle ran into one of the other cars after the initial impact. The 59-year-old woman driving that vehicle was not hurt.

The victim is identified as 39-year-old Andrew Gaines.

The crash occurred at about 12:05 a.m. at 7373 E. Valencia Rd.

Pima County sheriff's deputies said Gaines was traveling westbound on Valencia Road and a  61-year-old man was traveling eastbound when the two vehicles collided.

Both vehicles had severe damage.

The 61-year-old man was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition.

It is believed the drivers involved were wearing seatbelts and that speed may have been a factor, according to a sheriff's office statement.

It's unknown if alcohol was a factor, deputies said. The investigation is ongoing.
