A couple from Vernon said they were shocked Wednesday to find their oil bill paid in full.
Shannon Slater and her husband Brett said they noticed footprints in the snow leading up to the oil pipe outside of their home on Hany Lane.
"Went down, checked the oil and saw that it was almost full and we didn't order anything at all," said Shannon Slater.
She also said her husband originally thought it was a mistaken delivery. An invoice in their mailbox revealed the truth.
"It said pay it forward," Shannon Slater said. "Had all our information. Pay it forward and a smiley face."
The invoice showed 128 gallons of oil worth a total of $500 and paid in full. Ellington Oil, the company that delivered the gift, said its lips were sealed.
"Gentleman came in, said he wanted to gift some oil, gave a delivery address and an amount," said Mary Royce of Ellington Oil. "I said if the guy calls and wants to know who, he said, just write on the slip pay it forward."
Shannon Slater said she has no idea who did this but she and her husband are grateful. They said they will find a way to pay it forward.
"We just got married five months ago. Still trying to pay back those bills so this helps a lot, beyond what I can put into words," she said. "Thank you so much. It's greatly appreciated. It's definitely a tough winter and we definitely needed it, so thank you."
