In advance of the rain and snow showers expected to hit Southwest Georgia, Department of Transportation's vehicles are gathering a mix of salt and rocks to lay on the roads.

On Monday, trucks from 32 south Georgia counties stopped at the Department of Transportation center in Tifton to gather the mixture.

"When it comes to these types of conditions, we clear the most traveled roads first, obviously that is going to be the interstates," said District Communication Manager Nita Birmingham. "Then you go to the heavily traveled state grounds and then the less traveled areas."

I-75, Highway 112 and 300 are expected to be targeted first.

Birmingham says that you must stay at least 500 feet behind trucks dropping sand and not to pass them.
