Around noontime Monday, jurors asked the judge to clarify language, specifically the term "reasonable doubt."
The jury was deadlocked 8-4 Friday afternoon, and the judge gave jurors the weekend to think after a note was sent to Judge Mary-Lou Rup from the jury foreman Friday afternoon. The judge read the note Monday.
It stated: "Your honor, I regret to inform you that the jury is deadlocked 8-4. Please let us know how to proceed."
"If you are in doubt, the defendant, Miss Rintala, is entitled to that doubt," Rup told the jurors Monday afternoon.
"Jurors for acquittal should consider, in their minds, if their doubt is reasonable," she said.
Jurors were ordered to return Tuesday morning to continue deliberating. The jury was handed the case Jan. 28.
Rintala, 47, was accused of killing her wife, Annamarie Cochrane-Rintala, in their Granby home in 2010.
According to police, the couple had a "tumultuous" relationship and had discussed divorce. Rintala's first trial ended with a hung jury last March.
Earlier this month, the jury went to the crime scene at Rintala's home in Granby.
This is the first same-sex marriage murder trial for the state.
