Westfield boy spells his way to victory

WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

There is a new fifth grade spelling bee champion in Westfield.

Ryan Morash of Paper Mill Elementary School won the third city-wide spelling bee held at Westfield State University.

Morash spelled the word "annoyance" to win.

The bee is organized by the Circle-K Kiwanis Club.

Four hundred students competed in preliminary rounds earlier this school year before Thursday evening's final round.

Morash said he studied every day in order to win the trophy.

"I was relieved that I didn't lose because I really wanted this," he said.

At the end of the bee, Morash competed back and forth with Jayne Gosselin of Munger Hill Elementary School.

She incorrectly spelled "equinox," which led Morash to victory.
