SOUTH WINDSOR, CT (WFSB) -

Sgt. Eugene Thomas Field has been with the South Windsor Police Department for 37 1/2 years, and on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, he will retire from the force.

Field, widely knows as "Tom," was hired in August 1976 and graduated from the police academy two months later.

Field, the father of two children and grandfather of one, has lived in South Windsor throughout his career. He started as a patrol officer and patrol supervisor.

In 1997 he was assigned to traffic enforcement and was the first to lead the regional Metro Traffic Services traffic enforcement and investigation team.

Officials said Field became certified as a child passenger safety technician, which provided him with the training and skills necessary to instruct others on the proper installation of child safety seats.

Field has been recognized throughout Connecticut and New England for his expertise in child safety.

In 2003, Field was transferred to the department's Community Outreach office and instituted the Senior Safe Driving Program.

On his last day on Valentine's Day, Field will attend the annual Valentine's Day Child Safety Seat Check event at South Windsor's fire headquarters on Ellington Road.

"Field was my first patrol supervisor when I arrived here in 1987. We worked midnight shift together for a long time. It seems like everyone in town knows Tom. He is incredibly compassionate and has mastered the ability to mix a firm, authoritarian presence with an affable pastoral-like approachability," South Windsor Police Chief Matthew Reed said. "It is tough to lose someone with his local knowledge and skills. He has done a lot of wonderful things during his time here. He is simply a good guy. I know everyone here wishes him a long, healthy retirement; he deserves it."
