The Windsor Locks Police Department arrested a Springfield police officer and 10 other men in connection with "soliciting prostitution" during an undercover sting on Valentine's Day.
According to Sgt. John Delaney of the Springfield Police Department, 42-year-old John Wadlegger was one of the men arrested in the prostitution sting. Wadlegger has been with the department since 1995.
Wadlegger has been assigned to desk duty, and the Springfield Police Department is doing its own internal investigation.
Sgt. Delaney said that Wadlegger has been a model employee, and there has never been any other issues with him before this incident.
Police had received several complaints about prostitution occurring in Windsor Locks motels along the Route 75 commercial business district.
According to police, the prostitution was leading to "an increased number of larcenies, illegal drug use, child exploitation, disorderly conduct, as well as other related crimes and quality of life conditions."
Police engaged in "Operation Cupid" in which they placed an ad offering sex for money Friday.
"An undercover officer posing as a prostitute responded to numerous inquiries and requests for sexual services from 'clients,'" police said in a statement Saturday.
The undercover officer set up a meeting with the interested parties at an undisclosed motel in Windsor Locks where a group of officers were waiting for them.
The following men were arrested and charged through "Operation Cupid:"
Jesse Coughlin, 33, of Chester
Eric Oullette, 42, of Glastonbury
Brandon Blank, 28, of Bridgeport
John Norris, 53, of Enfield
Eslam Ayoub, 41, of Middletown
Wagner Brown, 34, of Waterbury
John Cook, 56, of South Windsor
Ravindra Wikramanaya, 54, of Chicopee
Bryan Deway, 46, of Windsor Locks
James Castelvetere, 59, of Enfield
John Wadlegger, 42, of Agawam
Ayoub was also charged with fourth-degree sexual assault.
