Massive snow piles make it dangerous for drivers at intersections

Posted: Updated:

With all the winter white that has come down on Connecticut, chances are you've come across those massive mountains of snow piled high.

It really doesn't matter where you are, these snow piles seem to be everywhere and clogging up intersections across the state.

The snow piles are hindering drivers and taking up parking spots in Connecticut including West Hartford and Cromwell.

Eyewitness News saw many drivers trying to take precautions when traveling on the city roads Monday.

"I can't see on either side," said Adrienne Greenwalt, of West Hartford. "And it's hard to find a place to park because all spots taken by snow."

When the sight line is diminished, police advised drivers to take it slow and be cautious. They also said drivers should make sure to watch out for children. Cromwell police Chief Anthony J. Salvatore reminded drivers a large snow pile could be a goldmine for a child to play in.

According to officials with the West Hartford Department of Public Works, business owners must keep things clear for customers.

Owners told Eyewitness News they hired help and stayed busy on Monday afternoon by salting the sidewalks. They'll use payloaders to tackle the larger snow piles.

After the holiday, Salvatore said crews will be back out knocking mounds down on their roads, but on private property business owners are responsible.

"I think because they've had so much snow so quickly - get rid of it by bringing in big dump trucks and then where do you put it," Salvatore said. "Yeah, just have to drive carefully, really."
