Many CT residents planning trips to warmer climates

Travel agents in Connecticut told Eyewitness News they've seen a big increase in bookings to tropical locations.

Travel experts at AAA actually used the word "desperate" to describe some of the people who call them these days, hoping to escape the Connecticut cold.

January to April are the busiest months for those looking for a winter getaway. As you can imagine, the most popular destinations are warm, tropical beaches. Eyewitness News has learned travelers are looking for something quick and easy

"They're looking for convenience. Non-stop flights out of Hartford, you can go on Delta," said Suzanne Aresco from AAA. "People are also looking for experiences to see what they can do when they get down there."

The No. 1 destination from Connecticut is the Dominican Republic. It's all inclusive with non-stop flights out of Bradley International Airport on Saturdays.

The second most popular location is Cancun, Mexico, which is also inclusive with non-stop flights. Other winter getaway favorites include cruises and Disney World.

AAA officials are advising travelers to get insurance in case your flight is canceled, due to the weather. That insurance will usually cover your hotels.
