Dealers seeing more customers looking for cars that are better in snow

Posted: Updated:

All these snowstorms have some folks rethinking their wheels and considering something better suited to do battle with Mother Nature.

Ariella Schwell, of Amerst, MA and her son, Noah, were shopping for a car on Presidents Day, a prime time to get a great deal on a new motor vehicle.

Schwell, like many of Monday's car shoppers, said she wants to retire her 11-year-old car and buy a newer SUV that can safely get her family through the snow and up their steep driveway.

"Several weeks ago at the beginning of a snowstorm with my little Toyota Matrix and my daughter in the back and I was really worried about actually getting her home because I was stuck," Schwell said.

On Monday, she test drove several makes and models with safety, fuel economy and price being the key factors.

"They're looking for safety," said Bill Sullivan, of Sullivan Auto Group. "Obviously when we have weather like this you do see an uptick in SUVs, not a huge uptick but more people inquiring about it."

Sullivan said before Saturday's snowstorm, his New London showroom was buzzing with customers and as soon as the roads got slick, the buyers disappeared.

Buyers disappeared again Saturday during the storm, but on Monday with the bright sun, customers such as Branford resident Antoinette Cassone were looking for newer cars that can deal with snowy weather.

"It's definitely better to get an all-wheel drive car when you have this much snow. You have to get into work like I do," said Cassone.

"Lots of repeat customers, but then we have the ones that have two-wheel drive and sick of not getting up their driveway," said Hayden Reynolds, of Reynolds Subaru. "And they come in and say it's time to get something that's all-wheel drive."
