Pothole problems plague roads ahead of storm

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Slippery conditions weren't the only obstacle drivers were expected to face Tuesday.

Potholes were a huge problem in the Hartford area near Interstate 84.

The Department of Transportation said it was working nonstop to pretreat and clear the roads with storms.

However, potholes continue to form from the melting snow and ice seeping into the pavement. When that refreezes, it expands and breaks up the asphalt.

Drivers said they've experienced popped tires, bent rims, damaged alignment and other problems.

The DOT said it does what it can to patch potholes, but it's only a temporary fix. The permanent repairs cannot take place until spring when the temperatures are warmer.
