A firefighter was hurt battling a garage fire Sunday morning in West Haven.

According to officials, the fire was reported in the rear of 122 Clark St. Crews were able to knock down the flames.

Just before the fire, police said officers were investigating a hazard in the roadway (a smashed glass aquarium) near 375 Elm St., when they noticed the fire.

"Right now it's just a storage garage," said Deputy Chief Scott Schwartz of the West Haven Fire Department. "But it used to be used for repairing cars."

Police are now investigating if the two incidents are related. Officers detained a 14-year-old who walked up to them and acted suspiciously.

The juvenile's footprints were in the snow near the fire scene. He admitted smashing the aquarium but denied any involvement with the fire, stating he was the one who called it in.

The 14-year-old also stated he had video of the fire on his iPhone.

Neighbors said they were pleased with the fire department's response.

"I'm glad the firefighters reacted as fast as they did," said Christina Rodriguez, a neighbor.

The injured firefighter was transported to the hospital but was expected to recover. Detectives were investigating a cause.
