Democratic state Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield of New Haven has won a special state senate election to succeed veteran Toni Harp, who's now the mayor of New Haven.
The New Haven Register reports (bit.ly/1clntzy) Holder-Winfield defeated Republican Steven R. Mullins 3,235 to 1,045 Tuesday according to unofficial returns.
Holder-Winfield had the backing of top state Democrats for the 10th District seat, including state Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney and U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy.
Mullins is interim chairman of the West Haven Planning and Zoning Commission. The New Haven Register reports that Mullins has said he opposed gun regulations enacted into state law last year following the fatal shootings of 20 children and six educators at a Newtown elementary school.
Harp was elected New Haven mayor last November.
