EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

One person died after a stolen car collided with a septic truck on Silver Lane in East Hartford Monday morning.

Police said a Honda was spotted on the other side of town on Burnside Avenue. They said they pursued it and were trying to stop it.

"They did follow that vehicle and were trying to stop it. But, it never turned into what happened here," said East Hartford police Sgt. Michael Demaine.

Police said they stopped well before the crash on Silver Lane.

However, that same motor vehicle crashed into a septic truck on Silver Lane near the intersection of Holland Lane around 11 a.m.

"It was a scary sight. I saw the flames," said Erica Bennett.

The driver of the truck was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the stolen car was killed, police said.

"Unfortunately, (I) looked out the window and saw (the) terrible, terrible accident," said JoAnn Denning, of East Hartford. "It was in fully flames. It was impossible to get whoever in the car out."

The accident reconstruction team spent hours interviewing witnesses and trying to piece together exactly what happened and who was driving the car in question.

"We ran that plate, came back to a stolen motor vehicle. If this is the vehicle, we donno," Demaine said. "But we're trying to figure out if it matches the plate."

Police said Silver Lane was closed between Forbes Street and the ramps for Interstate 384 until around 5 p.m.

The bus company rerouted buses that use Silver Lane in their routes.
