Residents team up to stop break-ins in local neighborhood

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Break-ins in one local neighborhood have residents on high alert, and they're working together to help put an end to it.

The residents say it's all about communication with each other and the police.

According to police, someone broke a window and took electronics from a home on Warrington Monday afternoon. Neighbors say this isn't the first time thieves have hit their area.

"I'm spreading the word from block to block," said one resident who wanted to remain anonymous. "Even though there's block watch and I Citizen, you have to watch out for each other."

She's asking her neighbors to keep an eye out at what's going on in the neighborhood, and asking them to talk to each other to learn who should and shouldn't be around. Toledo Police say that's one of the best things they can do.

"If the community can help us out by giving us some eyes and ears out on the street, that makes our job a lot easier," said Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

But that's not all the residents are doing.

"There's a business around me that has video surveillance, and some of my neighbors have video surveillance, and we share that," the anonymous resident said.

She's hoping that by keeping everyone on her block aware and alert, they can help police catch the suspects in the act.

"If we can catch a burglar, that makes our day," Sgt. Heffernan said. "So if you feel there's something suspicious going on in your neighborhood, give us a call."

Police say to trust your instinct. If you see someone on your street and it just doesn't seem right, call the police.
