The beach may beckon college students on spring break, but many are using their vacation to give back.
Several MTSU students spent Tuesday cleaning up trash from Sinking Creek and the nearby wetlands.
They suited up with gloves and heavy waders, then filled several bags with debris including trash and cigarette butts.
"I feel like it's part of my social responsibility to give back to the community and create an environment where we can be safe," said sophomore Daryl Jackson.
The effort is part of the university's Alternative Breaks Program, which arranges several volunteer projects during the spring vacation.
"I figured why not help Murfreesboro while I'm not just sitting around doing nothing?" said junior Andrea Brink. "So I just figured I'd come out and help."
