ANSONIA, CT (WFSB) -

A badly emaciated female pit bull was found in Ansonia this week and the town's animal shelter was looking for her owners.

The shelter said the dog was discovered in the area of Colony Park and Woodlawn Road.

It said she was weak and could barely stand up.

The pit bull was at a veterinarian's office where it was being fed and was resting.

The shelter said she will need a lot of medical attention because every bone in her body was visible, and she developed a tumor. Before it can be removed, she will have to gain weight and get strong.

Police said they need the public's help in finding whoever is responsible for leaving her and in such poor health.

"Whoever is responsible could be in trouble depending on the circumstances," said Ansonia Animal Control Officer Jean Roslonoswki.

Anyone with information about this dog or her owners was asked to call the Ansonia Animal Shelter at 203-410-7716.
