Uranium detected in Stamford wells

Numerous home wells have tested positive for uranium in Stamford, health officials announced on Friday.

According to the Stamford Department of Health tested 60 wells and found that 42 of them tested positive for uranium, of those 16 were at or above accepted EPA levels.

Following the positive tests Stamford is encouraging residents to sign up and have their wells tested.

Uranium is a occurs naturally in bedrock all over the world, and when groundwater comes in contact wit the bedrock the uranium can leach out into the water and contaminate it.

Long-term exposure to uranium can impact kidney function.

Uranium can be removed from drinking water with a filtration system.
