BRIDGEPORT, CT (WFSB) -

A Bridgeport man was arrested after police said he attempted to burn a child with a lighter Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses told police that Marvin Williams, 28, assaulted his 13-month-old son in the area of Lexington Avenue and Calhoun Street around 2:45 p.m.

A neighbor saw the assault, took the child away from the man and called police.

The neighbor told police the man took out a lighter and "attempted to burn the child."

The child, who did not appear to have any serious injuries was taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said.

Williams, who police said "appeared to be under the influence of some substance," was also transported to an area hospital.

They said he was charged with possession of narcotics, risk of injury to a minor, reckless endangerment and third-degree assault.
