More than 2,000 patients were expected to take advantage of the free Connecticut Mission of Mercy dental clinic Friday and Saturday in Hartford, according to state officials.
The first of them showed up around 7:20 a.m. Thursday, nearly 23 hours before the clinic is due to open its doors.
This year's event is taking place at the XL Center at 1 Civic Center Plaza.
Volunteers began setting up Thursday. They put up more than 130 stations. They said it was expected to be the largest clinic they've ever done.
The doors opened at 6 a.m. Friday and patients were treated on a first-come, first-serve basis. They'll open at the same time Saturday.
Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra, state Sen. Donald Williams Jr. and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman announced the clinic back on March 26. They said this year's event marks the seventh year the two-day clinic is being offered.
In previous years, the event was held in Tolland, New Haven, Middletown, Waterbury, Danbury and Bridgeport.
