Police were called to Fort Pleasant Avenue Wednesday night and saved a woman's life before she was shot by her ex-boyfriend, Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney said.

During a violent struggle with police, the suspect unsuccessfully attempted to wrestle an officer's gun out of his hand, Delaney said. A shot was fired in the process, but no one was injured.

A 911 call came in just after 7:30 p.m. A 21-year-old female victim stated she had just ended her relationship with her boyfriend and that he was punching her dashboard and pulling her emergency brake in an uncontrolled rage, Delaney said.

Officers arrived on scene after the suspect had left and escorted the victim up to her third-floor apartment. When they arrived they noticed that her door was damaged, but closed. The officers could hear male voices talking from inside the apartment so they had the victim stand behind them several stairs below her apartment.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Daneshell Cruz, could be heard saying, "Just open the door, I'm gonna drop [her]," Delaney said.

"At that moment the door opened and the officers observed Cruz with a handgun in his hand," Delaney said, adding that the officers acted quickly and attempted to grab Cruz's arm and wrestle the gun from his hand.

This forced Cruz to drop his gun, but he then began to grab at an officer's gun in attempt to take it from him. After a brief struggle, the officer's gun fired one shot into a stairwell wall. The two officers were able to handcuff Cruz at that point.

Police charged Cruz, of 272 Canon Circle, with malicious damage to a motor vehicle, breaking and ending during the evening, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a firearm, and attempted larceny of a firearm, according to an arrest report.

Cruz was held overnight and will be arraigned Thursday in Springfield District Court.

Officers Christopher Collins and David Robillard were commended for their heroism.

"These officers did a fantastic job, making this arrest where nobody was hurt," Delaney said.
