Student's ankles taped to chair; teacher on leave

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, Mich. (AP) - A high school teacher in Monroe is on paid leave as district officials investigate a report that a band student's ankles were duct-taped to a chair to help with her posture.

Jefferson Schools Superintendent Craig Haugen tells  the Monroe News for a story Saturday that he received a complaint this week against the teacher for "reported corrective measures in the classroom."

Haugen did not release the band teacher's name. He says in a statement that the teacher has been told not to have contact with students or come onto school district property.

Several students are petitioning the school to allow the teacher to return for the band's trip next month to Florida.

Band booster and parent Debbie Barron says the teacher stresses proper posture to better play instruments.
