Good Samaritan helps rescue woman from burning home

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

An anonymous good Samaritan stopped to alert a woman that a home where she was staying was on fire Friday morning in Franklin.

The woman said she was awoken by a loud boom during a thunderstorm but didn't find anything wrong with the house, so she went back to sleep.

A short time later, a driver saw smoke coming from the three-story house on Tulloss Road and raced over to help.

"The passer-by was able to climb the fence and beat on the door enough to get the young lady that was asleep in the house out," said Williamson County Fire Coordinator Jay Bonson.

Neighbors Jose and Lois Fernandez said they awoke to the roaring fire.

"It's just so sad to pull into that driveway and see all that demolished and burnt to the ground with all their possessions," Lois Fernandez said.

The Fernandezes say whoever stopped to alert the woman in the house surely saved her life.

"That's the way people are in Williamson County. They help each other," Lois Fernandez said.

The homeowners were away from the home at the time of the fire, so they had the family friend staying overnight with their pets.

She was able to grab one of the dogs when she safely evacuated the house, and the other pets were also later saved from the fire.

Officials are still not sure who the good Samaritan is but they are hoping to contact him or her.

And while officials say the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike, the investigation is ongoing.

The homeowners said they also want to extend their deepest gratitude to the person who alerted their family friend about the fire and hope to contact that good Samaritan to thank them personally.
