A Metro police officer was hospitalized after crashing into a tree during a chase in Antioch early Sunday.
Police say Officer Nicholas Berens was in pursuit of a car in connection to a shooting when he crashed at the corner of Bell and Mt. View roads.
Officials say the car in front of Berens suddenly stopped in the left lane in response to the police sirens. Berens swerved to avoid the vehicle, ran off the road, and struck a tree, pinning him inside.
"His vehicle struck the tree on the driver's side and then rotated 180 degrees around the tree and came to rest," said Capt. William Dyer.
According to police, it took firefighters 20 minutes to cut the man out of the wreckage.
Berens was rushed to Vanderbilt in critical-but-stable condition.
"Code 3 is about as serious as you can get. I mean, it's life threatening but right now they're saying that he is stable," Dyer explained, "Right now that's our number one concern."
Berens was investigating one of several shootings before the accident.
"There was a rash of things that were going on at one time. There was a shooting on Murfreesboro Road. We had just left a shooting out on West Nashville and then this came in" Dyer told Channel 4 News. "But it's hard to monitor 7 or 8 radio frequencies at one time."
At least 12 shots were fired outside Club X near the corner of Murfreesboro Pike and Bell Road.
One person was taken to the hospital after that shooting.
A second shooting was reported near the corner of Bell Road and Zelida Avenue.
Police have not released any information about that incident.
