SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A 12-year-old is being held at the Regional Youth Detention Center charged in the shooting death of an 11-year-old family member.

Police say it happened around 9 p.m. Friday night when the boys were playing with a gun at a house on Church Street.

The gun went off, and a bullet struck Montrez Burroughs in the chest. He later died from his injuries.

Burroughs was a fifth grader at Brock Elementary School.

The 12-year-old has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a person under 18.

According to police, preliminary indication is that there was no intentional effort for the shooter to shoot the victim.

Police also consulted with the District Attorney's office before any charges were filed.

They are still investigating how the gun got into the house, and no adults have been charged yet in the case, but the investigation is still ongoing.
